Overview

In this project, I designed a seamless experience for customers to track their construction material deliveries in real time. This case study details our process, challenges, and solutions. The CEMEX Track App was developed for both iOS and Android platforms, with my focus on the Android version. I leveraged Material Design components and Android-specific UI libraries to create a native feel while maintaining the app's core functionality and brand identity.

  • Implemented Material Design 3 guidelines

  • Utilized Android Jetpack libraries for navigation and lifecycle management

  • Optimized UI components for various Android screen sizes and densities

Challenge

Construction projects operate on tight schedules where timing is crucial. Late deliveries can result in costly delays and idle workers. Our challenge was to create a transparent delivery tracking system that would:

  • Provide real-time visibility of order status and location

  • Enable direct communication between clients and drivers

  • Facilitate easy order modifications when needed

  • Create a simple yet effective service evaluation system

Key Insights

Our research revealed several critical needs:

  • Users needed accurate ETAs to coordinate workers and equipment on site

  • Communication gaps between drivers and clients often led to delivery complications

  • Clients wanted a way to quickly modify orders when circumstances changed

  • Both clients and CEMEX needed a reliable way to measure service quality

Solutions

1. Real-time Tracking Interface

We designed an intuitive map interface that shows:

  • Current location of delivery vehicles

  • Estimated time of arrival

  • Order details including product type and volume

  • Delivery route and potential delays

2. Communication Hub

We implemented:

  • In-app messaging system between clients and drivers

  • Push notifications for important updates

  • Direct line to sales representatives

3. Order Management

We created features for:

  • Real-time order modifications

  • Order history tracking

  • Delivery confirmation system

4. Service Evaluation

We developed:

  • Simple 5-star rating system

  • Detailed feedback forms

  • Service improvement suggestions

Testing

We tested our app design in three main steps:

  • First, we made simple sketches to plan how the app would work

  • Then, we created test versions that people could try out

  • Finally, we had some of our customers test the app and give us feedback|

Lessons Learned

Throughout this project, we learned that:

  • Tracking needs to show exact delivery times because construction work depends on it

  • The app must be easy to use and understand, especially when working at construction sites

  • The app has to work well even when internet connection is bad

  • Getting regular customer feedback helps us make the app better
